Our February 2016 cover story incorrectly stated that the hearing officer’s recommendations in the East Maui interim instream flow standards (IIFS) contested case hearing was expected early this year, when, in fact, those recommendations had been issued on January 15. We sincerely regret the error.
In short, hearing officer Lawrence Miike recommended amending the IIFS of 12 of the 27 streams that were part of the 2001 petition filed by the Native Hawaiian Legal Corporation. He recommended leaving the IIFS for the remaining streams at the status quo as of October 8, 1988.
Miike’s new proposed IIFS would increase the amount of water to be left in the 12 streams by several million gallons a day compared to the IIFS the Commission on Water Resource Management set in 2008 and 2010.
More on this to come.
