{"id":8458,"date":"2015-11-02T05:38:11","date_gmt":"2015-11-02T05:38:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.environment-hawaii.org\/?p=8458"},"modified":"2018-06-15T01:24:05","modified_gmt":"2018-06-15T01:24:05","slug":"net-energy-metering-too-successful-for-its-own-good","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/environment-hawaii.org\/?p=8458","title":{"rendered":"Net-Energy Metering: Too Successful for its Own Good?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Defending the decision to phase out new net-energy metering customers, the Public Utilities Commission noted that the NEM program \u201cwas simply not designed for \u2026 deployment at the scale experienced today.\u201d When the current NEM program was authorized in 2001, \u201cthe Legislature mandated a cap on customer participation at 0.5 percent of system peak load (an increase from the original NEM program cap of 0.1 percent of system peak load).\u201d With the Legislature\u2019s blessing, the PUC allowed participation to increase to the point where \u201cNEM program capacity now represents between 30 percent and 53 percent of each of the HECO companies\u2019 system peak load.
