{"id":12278,"date":"2020-03-01T21:35:52","date_gmt":"2020-03-01T21:35:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.environment-hawaii.org\/?p=12278"},"modified":"2020-03-01T23:16:22","modified_gmt":"2020-03-01T23:16:22","slug":"new-noteworthy-ohia-rust-rule-pepeekeo-point-corrections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/environment-hawaii.org\/?p=12278","title":{"rendered":"New &#038; Noteworthy: \u2018Ohi\u2018a Rust Rule, Pepe\u2018ekeo Point, Corrections"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Delay in <\/strong>\u2018<strong>Ohi\u2018a Rust Rule:\u00a0<\/strong>Last August, after many years of delay, the state Department of Agriculture\u00a0finally approved rules to ban the importation of plants in the Myrtaceae family from other states, in hopes of protecting ohi\u2018a from a devastating rust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of late February, the rules were still sitting, unsigned, on the desk of&nbsp;Gov. David Ige.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has proposed a rule that would do much the same thing with respect to international imports. Comments on the draft rule were due February 24.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The governor\u2019s office was asked&nbsp;to explain the delay, but had not responded by press time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to information from the Department of Land and Natural&nbsp;Resources\u2019 Division of Forestry and&nbsp;Wildlife, the federal rule is somewhat contingent on the state taking action, so it is important that the state rule be adopted soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pepe\u2018ekeo Point Changes:&nbsp;<\/strong>The construction of a large house on coastal property about seven miles north of Hilo is still stalled, but the transfer of ownership of the company \u2013 Hilo Project LLC \u2013 that holds title may mean changes are coming. The entity&nbsp;is now managed by SJSU Tower Real Estate Fund, LLC, affiliated with San&nbsp;Jose State University in California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bert Kobayashi, Jr., an attorney representing Hilo Project, informed the subdivision\u2019s management agent of the changes. The former owners \u2013 Gary Olimpia and Scott Watson \u2013 and their attorney, Steven Strauss,&nbsp;\u201care no longer affiliated with HPL&nbsp;and the property and do not speak for and\/or represent HPL.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In future communications, Kobayashi wrote, \u201cdo not provide any information as to the property to anyone\u201d other than Kobayashi or&nbsp;HPL spokesperson Leslie Rohn, \u201cand specifically not to Olimpia, Watson,&nbsp;or Strauss.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/environment-hawaii.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/DSC04838-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12279\" srcset=\"https:\/\/environment-hawaii.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/DSC04838-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/environment-hawaii.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/DSC04838-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/environment-hawaii.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/DSC04838-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Hilo Project has obtained a county permit to drain&nbsp;standing water in the unfinished&nbsp;swimming pool and remove rusting rebar from areas where construction had begun years ago. The contractor,&nbsp;Big Island Mechanical and Construction, is being paid more than $40,000 for the emergency work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rat Lungworm Corrections:&nbsp;<\/strong>Last&nbsp;month we incorrectly identified Dr.&nbsp;Alfred Mina, a Hilo veterinarian, in an article on rat lungworm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, Dr. Argon Steel set us straight on his testing of bleach and chlorine as possible washes to remove slugs and snails carrying the parasite from produce. The 25 percent bleach solu- tion that Steel used \u201cwas 25 percent dilution of household bleach, which&nbsp;is about 6 percent, so the dilution I&nbsp;was using was actually 1.5 percent,\u201d Steel informed us.
